Young or old, many people have difficulty swallowing their pills. And as a pharmacy in New York, New York, Thomas Drugs believes this is an issue we regularly encounter in our work. It is for this reason that we have developed strategies to address this.
Thus, below are some of the pill-swallowing strategies we use ourselves, which you can try, too:
- Visualize the action of swallowing the pill before you try to swallow, then take a generous swig of water along with the pill.
- Put the pill in your mouth, take a medium-sized sip of water, and quickly but carefully tilt your head forward as you swallow it.
- Bury the pill in soft food of your preference, but be sure to consult your doctor or pharmacist first if it’s okay to take pills with your food.
- Try a pill-coating lubricant or a spray-on lubricant if your swallowing problems have something to do with the discomfort of swallowing pills or a specific health condition.
Before trying any of the above, it is good to examine where your difficulty is coming from. Is it fear? Is it simply because you’ve never tried it before? Or maybe you have a physical limitation that is making it difficult?
Determining this will be key to choosing the best pill-swallowing strategy to use.
